Twisted‘s Avan Jogia has landed a role in Michael opposite James Franco for director Justin Kelly and executive producer Gus Van Sant. Franco stars as a gay activist who, after enduring years of taunts and struggle, becomes an anti-gay Christian pastor. Jogia will play Will, a young man Michael (Franco) meets and falls for along his journey. Earlier this week ABC Family cancelled the teen drama series Twisted, which starred Jogia as a troubled high schooler who returns to his hometown amid suspicion after killing his aunt as a child. The 22-year-old Canadian thesp who earned a following on Nickelodeon’s Victorious was recently chosen to lead Spike’s upcoming event series Tut playing the young King Tutankhamun opposite Ben Kingsley. He’s been booking more indie feature fare of late including Ten Thousand Saints with Hailee Steinfeld and Shangri-La Suite with Emily Browning, Ashley Greene, and Luke Grimes. Jogia recently wrapped filming on teen comedy The Outskirts with Ashley Rickards, Eden Sher, and former Nickelodeon co-star Victoria Justice. He’s repped by ICM Partners, LINK and Tyman Stewart at Characters.

You probably imagine that we here at Teen Vogue spend lots of time rubbing elbows on red carpets and hanging out in directors’ chairs on sets. And, well, you’re right! Getting a peek behind the scenes is one of our favorite parts of the job. Especially when something cool and insider-y happens while we’re there.

Case in point: We recently got to spend some time with Avan Jogia, AKA the dark and mysterious star of ABC Family’s Twisted, on the set of his upcoming movie The Outskirts. The comedy co-stars a bevy of Young Hollywood powerhouses, including Victoria Justice (who Avan knows from his Victorious days), Peyton List, and Ashley Rickards, to name a few. We had just finished chatting with Victoria when Avan came over with a huge smile on his face—he had just discovered (while we were there!) that he’d won the title role of King Tut in a brand-new Spike TV series. Huge news for the 22-year-old, who will now be leading-man material on not one but two major television shows.

Victoria couldn’t have been happier for her friend. There was a lot of hugging (and even some jumping around on her part!), and it made us realize what we’ve all always hoped about our favorite stars: These guys really, genuinely care about each other’s success.

Sweetness aside, the news created a bit of a frenzy: Apparently Avan only had a week until he had to fly off to start training for the physically-demanding series, but such is life when you’re an up-and-coming actor taking on big-deal roles. “I’m so excited to be part of this series,” he told us, still flushed with emotion from winning the part. “It’s going to be amazing to work with Sir Ben Kingsley, someone that I admired growing up. We’ll be shooting in Morocco for five months. It’s going to be incredibly physical: I’ll be riding chariots, shooting arrows, throwing knives. I just need to learn how to do all that. This is my life—this is being an actor. That’s the hardest part of the job, but it’s also the most exciting: You never know what you’re going to have to get good at, so you have to be really good at picking up stuff quickly. Like riding horses and chariots, of all things.”

Twisted and Victorious star Avan Jogia will take on the role as the Egyptian ruler in the Viacom-owned cable network’s original miniseries Tut, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

We are thrilled to work with such an incredibly gifted young actor who is perfectly suited to take on the immensely complex character of King Tutankhamun,” said Spike original series exec vp Sharon Levy.

“Vancouver-born actor Avan Jogia will be an outstanding addition to the cast of Tut,” added Michael Prupas, CEO of Muse Entertainment. “Jogia is a hot young talent with a loyal following who has already made a name for himself in film and television.”

he cast of the upcoming high school comedy The Outskirts may still be busy filming on set in New York, but fans can now get a sneak peek at the film in newly released photos from the flick!
Entertainment Weekly shared two new photos of the star-studded cast, which includes Victorious star Victoria Justice, Twisted‘s Avan Jogia, Jessie‘s Peyton List, Awkward‘s Ashley Rickards, and The Bling Ring‘s Katie Chang.

The Outskirts follows: “what happens when a high school’s uncool kids overthrow the popular crew, led by the Blair Waldorf-like Whitney (Claudia Lee). There’s drama, there’s humor. And, as with any good teen movie, there are tears.”

The director of the flick, Peter Hutchings dished to EW: “What made me want to direct this movie more than just being really excited to see it when it came out is the fact that the first time I read the script, I was laughing so hard and by the time I got to the end, I was in tears.” he said, adding that the movie was “nerd-tastic.”

The movie also stars Jeanette Diloné, Will Peltz, Eden Sher, and Jazmyn Richardson.
